Dallas-based artist Christopher Stewart explores the relationship between nature, time and memory to observe beautiful moments in aging and deterioration.
His paintings evoke a sense of fragility and the passing of time. Painterly gestures are layered with varied textures and color. The unpredictability of drips from solvent are embraced and weaved into the composition, sometimes in an improvisational manner.
Stewart bridges the relationship between representation and abstraction. Works inspired by fractured rock formations or portions of an evolved landscape, for example, now have an ambiguity that speak to a continuously changing ecosystem.
"It’s important the works have some randomness and imperfections in them. Moments that feel familiar start to dissipate and a compositional balance often comes out of it.”
